Once You Get Your Card

If your application was granted and you have received your credit card there are still some things to keep in mind:

• Sign your card, do it immediately upon receiving your card. This way no one else can use it.


• File the accompanying paper work in a safe place. It contains important information, such as customer service telephone numbers, in case your card is lost or stolen.


• Call the card issuer to activate the card. This step is required by many issuers in order to minimize fraud and to give you additional information.


• Keep your account information to yourself. Unless you know who you are dealing with, never give out your credit card number or expiration date over the phone. If you are unlucky, a criminal might use this information to steal money from you.


• Keep copies of sales slips and compare the charges when your bill arrives.


• Promptly report questionable charges to the card issuer in writing.
  
• Do not let anybody borrow your credit card, not even a friend. Your credit privilege and history are simply too precious to risk.


• Use your credit card responsibly. Having a credit card makes it easy to buy something now and pay for it later. This can be very helpful in many situations, but if you are not careful you might end up buying more than you can pay for. And if you do not pay your bill in full you will most likely have to pay finance charges on what you still owe. If you start having troubles repaying your debt, you could blemish your credit report. This can have a very negative effect on your life as a poor credit report makes it more difficult to finance a car or home, get insurance, and even get a job.
